“If you should ever need us, sir, you only have to let us know. We’ll all come. You only have to call.”
— Captain Gibson, Republic of Congo

Governments can rise or collapse on the whim of a wire transfer. When a legitimate African president is deposed in a bloody coup, corporate power brokers orchestrate an unsanctioned, high-stakes military rescue.

Tasked with assembling a lethal strike force of sixty combat veterans—Paratroopers, Royal Marines, and frontline specialists—one commander leads his men deep into the suffocating canopy of Central Africa.

Their objective is clear: penetrate hostile territory, free the captive leader, and secure the vital river bridgehead. Cut off from all official channels and outgunned at every checkpoint, the bond between brothers-in-arms becomes the only line between survival and oblivion.

From Chapter One

Republic of Congo, 2005

There was a slight chill in the air that night. There were no stars and only a crescent moon in the darkness of the night sky; just the Central African darkness wrapping round the scattered groups of men.

The cloud cover was lying hardly off the tops of the iroko trees, and the waiting men prayed it would stay a while longer as they waited for the approaching aeroplane to take them to safety.

Further up the makeshift airfield, in an old derelict aircraft hangar with its doors wide open, four men sat in a 110 Land Rover and watched the dim figures moving from the bush towards the plane…

As the minutes passed, the groups of men waiting in the bush heard the soft rumble of an aircraft approaching. The Jetstream light aircraft was on its way. Quickly, bodies ran towards the makeshift runway carrying their fluorescent handheld batons…

The Ambush is Set.

Discover what happens when the wheels touch the dirt strip and the gunfire erupts.

Behind The Realism

Written By Someone Who Lived It

James Vincent O'Donnell was born in Derby. He served with the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters (now the Mercian Regiment) as an infantry soldier and regimental medical assistant for six years, experiencing firsthand the discipline, humor, and brutal brotherhood of active soldiering.

In 1990, he transferred to the Royal Air Force as an aircraft technician, maintaining rotary-wing workhorses including the Wessex, Chinook CH47, and Puma helicopters. After his military service, he brought his technical precision to Rolls-Royce Aerospace Engineering before pursuing Creative Writing & Film Studies at the University of Derby.

This rare fusion of infantry combat experience, aviation mechanics, and storytelling craft gives Honour Amongst Mercenaries a heart-pounding level of visceral authenticity that few authors can match.
